South West Coast Path: GPS Survey results

The South West Coast Path Team have thoroughly surveyed the path using the Global Positioning System (GPS). Team member Sue Applegate spent 102 days walking the entire path during the latter part of 1999 and into 2000. While walking she carried a GPS back-pack which enabled her to record the exact track of the path and the position of all stiles, way-mark posts and other signs, as well surveying the general condition of the route.

The following facts have since emerged from a study of the data collected;

The path is 630 miles (1014km) long, some 17 miles longer than the previous best estimate
there are 2,473 signs and way-mark posts
walking the complete path requires encountering 921 stiles and 26,719 steps
there are 302 bridges, the longest of which is at Thurlestone in South Devon and is 80 yards (73m) long
a total of 19 miles (30km) of coast is at risk to regular coastal slippage.
